Okay, the planning's done and you've bought the parts. You're in the yard, shovel in hand, ready to start.

1. Place a flag at fixture locations and wiring hub location as indicated on your plan.
Tip: Use string to show where the landscape lighting cable will run. Wait! Make sure you know where all gas lines, power lines and cable TV lines are before you start to dig. Be sure to call your utility companies if you need help.
2. Plot your layout with a long string and dig trenches along that route. Depths should range from nine to 24 inches. The deeper the better in flowerbeds where there will be seasonal digging and plantings. In lawn areas be sure to dig deep enough to prevent damage from thatching, edging or aerating. Rule of thumb: Nine inches.
Tip: To run pipe & wire under existing walkways you can "drill" using water pressure. Get a piece of PVC long enough to go under the walk, glue a female thread adapter to one end and attach a garden hose. On the other end glue a male thread adapter and connect a Spray Nozzle. Dig your trench up to the walk on both sides. Now turn on the water and work your way through. It may take a while, and it will get muddy so turn off the water once in a while to let the water soak in. Do not use this method underneath any joints in the walkway or it will cause they to sag and or rise and become uneven, try to do it in the center of the section. <<Back | Next>>
